Packing list for a 2-3-day camping trip.

Toiletries and personal care

  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush
  • Biodegradable soap-shampoo
  • Camp towel
  • Strong sunscreen and lip balm
  • Insect repellent


  • Underwear
  • Long underwear (top and bottom)
  • 2 T-shirts
  • 2 pairs of hiking socks
  • Long pants
  • Shorts
  • Belt
  • Lightweight long-sleeve sweater
  • Medium-weight sweater or fleece jacket
  • Medium to heavy trail hikers
    —with good traction and ankle support.
  • Flip-flops or sandals
  • Baseball cap, boonie hat, etc.
  • Bandana or buff
  • Rainproof jacket with hood
  • Warm hat
  • Gloves

Food and drink

  • Insulated cup, plate, bowl and spork
  • Canteen or water bottle
    —at least one quart.
  • Fire flint, lighter, matches and other fire-making implements
  • Stove and fuel
  • Cookset
  • Cleaning supplies
    —baby wipes work great.
  • Energy bars
  • Backpacking food

    Fixed blade full tang knife is the best.

    Search and rescue, your physician, etc.
  • Hand shovel

Luggage and security

  • Pack cover
  • Daypack for excursions away from the camp
    The one with hydration bladder is the best.
  • Backpack


  • Tent
  • Sleeping pad

  • Headlamp and/or flashlight with extra batteries
  • PLB or SPOT
  • Solar charger
  • CB radio
  • Map of the region, compass and GPS (optional)
  • Watch with alarm
  • Camera with extra memory and batteries


  • Cotton t-shirt for night

To do

  • Notify someone of your plans
    Tell them your destination, how long you'll be there and when to expect you back.
  • Activate proper SPOT profile
  • Delete old pictures from camera
  • Charge and replace batteries in all electronic devices
  • Download maps to GPS
  • Print out maps, guides, etc.
